The Mainz Gladius was one of the earlier versions of the Roman short sword, characterized by its wasp-waisted blade and long point. This design combined superior cutting power with exceptional stabbing ability. While later versions like the Pompeii pattern emerged, the Mainz Gladius remained in use, with 4th-century Legionnaires often carrying this model alongside newer designs.
