Maximilian Gauntlets – 16-Gauge Steel (Pair)

Designed for reenactment, stage, and display, the Maximilian Gauntlets use riveted lames and swivel-rivets to achieve smooth, glove-like movement while keeping the knuckles, thumb and wrist well protected. The interior is blackened to help resist rust. A soft suede glove is anchored at the thumb and otherwise floats inside the steel shell; a leather retaining strap helps position your hand. Because the liner is not fully fixed, the edge of the shell will cover anywhere from the fingertips to the first knuckle depending on your hand size—an authentic feel that many users fine-tune to taste.

For a tighter fit during heavy use, you may optionally add palm straps or rivet the glove fingers to the plate with adjustable buckles (simple DIY modifications).

The Maximilian style flourished under Emperor Maximilian I (c. 1500), recognizable by its sleek profiles and fluted, multi-lame construction that increased rigidity without excess weight. Mitten gauntlets like these provided excellent impact distribution for the hand in close combat while preserving dexterity for weapon handling.
